Is Clover Safe for Dogs to Walk On?

White clover is not toxic to dogs, and walking on it is fine. A dog that grazes a mouthful may get mild stomach upset, which is true of most plants they eat. The two things actually worth thinking about are bees and a lookalike plant that shares the name.

The bee problem is the real one

Clover flowers are excellent forage for honeybees and bumblebees, which is one of the arguments for clover lawns. It also means bees at ankle height, in a place your dog walks with its nose down.

Stings on a paw are painful and usually uneventful. Stings in the mouth or throat, which happen when a dog snaps at an insect, can swell enough to matter. Dogs can also have full allergic reactions, the same as people.

Mowing before the clover blooms removes almost all of the risk, because no flowers means no foraging bees. Clover in a mown lawn flowers on short stalks, so a weekly cut through the bloom period keeps it mostly flowerless.

The lookalike that is not clover

Several plants get called clover, and one of them is worth identifying.

The leaflet shape settles it in two seconds. True clover leaflets are rounded ovals. Oxalis leaflets are hearts with a dent at the outer edge, and the plant tastes sour, which is why children and animals sometimes chew it.

A dog grazing a little oxalis in the yard is not an emergency. Sustained eating of large amounts, or a small dog working through a potted shamrock, is worth a call to your vet.

What actually makes a lawn unsafe for a dog

Not the clover. In almost every case it is something applied to the lawn rather than something growing in it.

Herbicides and insecticides while still wet, granules that have not been watered in, and cocoa mulch in nearby beds all carry more risk than any lawn weed. The timing rules for treated turf are in is weed killer safe for pets once it’s dry and are grub killers safe around kids and pets.

Fungi are the other genuine one. Some lawn mushrooms are toxic and identifying species reliably is hard, so removal beats identification: mushrooms in the lawn.

Why some dog owners plant clover on purpose

Clover does not brown from dog urine the way grass does. It fixes its own nitrogen, so the concentrated nitrogen in urine that burns a grass lawn does far less visible damage to a clover one. If you are tired of repairing spots, that is a real advantage, and it is a different approach to the problem described in dog urine spots.

Clover also stays green through dry spells that turn grass straw-colored, and it needs no fertilizer.

What to do next

If you would rather remove it, treat the cause instead of the plant. Clover thrives in lawns low in nitrogen, so a thin underfed lawn invites it back every year no matter how often you spray.
