Equipment care & fixes

Mowers, spreaders, trimmers: specific symptoms and specific fixes, with the checks that actually find the fault.

Equipment problems announce themselves as symptoms: stripes that will not line up, a mower that cranks but will not fire, a spreader that leaves a burned edge. This cluster starts from the symptom and walks the checks in the order that actually finds the fault — blades before carburetor, deck level before "bad grass", battery before starter.

The same discipline applies to buying. A broadcast spreader and a drop spreader are not interchangeable; a robot mower handles flat open turf and quietly fails on anything else; a cordless battery that dies mid-season is usually a storage habit, not a defect. The guides here cover the fixes first — most "broken" mowers need fifteen minutes, not a parts order.

If a guide points at a repair you would rather not do, that is a normal answer. Knowing the actual fault still saves money: it is the difference between buying a blade sharpening kit and being told the deck is cracked.

Quick answers

My mower leaves uneven stripes. Where do I start?
Tire pressure and deck level before anything else — a half-psi difference side to side shows up as a visible stripe. Only after both sides measure level do blades, deck damage or ground conditions come into it.
How do I know if the problem is the battery or the mower?
Charge fully, then run the lightest load you can. If runtime collapses on light load, the battery cells are tired; if it cuts out only under load, the mower is drawing more than it should — usually dull blades or clogged housing.
Should I sharpen or replace mower blades?
Sharpen while the cutting edge is straight; replace when nicks repeat along the edge or after the blade has been sharpened down to the wear marks. Most home lawns get two to three sharpenings per season.
